Kinsly Kota Kinabalu

Located in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, the space for Kinsly is designed to celebrate the passage of time and the gathering of kith and kin. The palette is built on a base of wood with a plethora of colours inspired by food and nature. A bow-shaped motif is used throughout the space in various forms, from the punched out pattern on the facade screen, to the stainless steel plates set into the floor, to the wall relief running the length of the dining space, playing on space, colour, layering. Daylight filters in through the facade screen, and changes as the day progresses, beginning with the soft diffused morning light to the golden evening light that flows into the dining space as dinner service begins. As night falls, the interior of the restaurant glows through the screen. A banquette seat runs along the length of the restaurant articulated at certain parts to form curved and booth seating areas. The kitchen is open and the food preparation process is on full display. At the centre of the restaurant is a bar counter that ends with communal table on one side. Further in, there is a more intimate secondary dining area in a cove cladded in wood and anchored by a framed artwork. Every visit to the restaurant is intended to be different, trying dishes made with produce of the season, and meeting friends old and new.
